I’d like to enlist your help with something. We recently revised our website to make it more functional for our visitors. Last week we added a “Gallery” function so that you will be able to see samples of my work in various categories.
I would truly appreciate it if you would visit the Gallery and give me some feedback on it how it functions for you. With today’s hectic schedules I know that is asking a lot of you, but if you can swing perhaps 10 minutes, I would be very …

Spring is in the air, so what better time to actually pull your camera, lens, and accessory manuals out of cold storage and actually thumb through them? I guarantee that no matter what your level of expertise you WILL learn something new or remember something important that you totally forgot about.
If you get a moment, after perusing them, please send me one tidbit you picked up that you plan to use. Just use the comments box below.

Admittedly I have arthritis in a fairly big way, mostly in my back and neck. I like to think that it’s the result of having been stupid enough to play football in high school when I weighed 150 pounds soaking wet and my team’s offensive line averaged 205 pounds (with me on it)! But, as my wife keeps pointing out, I can hardly blame that anymore.
Here you can see the REAL reason for my back woes.
We were hiking in Kipahulu, Maui when she snapped this photo. Thank God for LowePro’s …

I don’t mean to be alarmist, but if you are anywhere in the vicinity of where I am taking pictures, please take note. Both Nikon and Hasselblad have installed a TOP SECRET MAGNETETRON in their respective cameras that they sold to me. I have been aware of it for several years now, but my wife finally confirmed it with the picture below. Allow me to explain.
It seems as if every time I stop in a location to photograph, within a few minutes a flock of people will suddenly stop, get …

Today is my last day in Hawaii. After time spent on Kauai and Maui, my gear is all packed and ready for the red-eye flight back to the cold and freezing rain of Maryland.
In terms of photography, I felt it was a mixed bag (see my previous blogs from Hawaii). I managed to have some really good days, with outstanding images, but other days were a struggle. There were the typical weather issues (I don’t mind rain, but rain mixed with blustery winds drives me nuts!). Then on my last few days …

“As ye judge, so shall ye be judged.” I recall listening to a preacher ranting about this one night many years ago as I drove home from a late night dinner meeting with a client group. The preacher, obviously possessed by some otherworldly force, admonished us sinners about not judging others because we, in turn, would be judged by them.
I got to thinking about that a couple of days ago as I sat here in Maui, reviewing a previous day’s shoot. Trust me when I say that not very many …

Maui, Hawaii in February can mean only one thing- the whales are in town. Specifically, this is the time that thousands of humpbacks are in full force in Maui, frolicking in the protected area between Maui and the nearby islands of Lanai and Molokai (as well as others). And what a sight they are to behold.
Stand on any beach from Kapalua to Wailea for more than five minutes and if you don’t see at least a dozen blows, fin slaps, and breeches you are facing away from the ocean. This …

I found a really sweet stream on Maui, about an hour from my hotel. But when I visited it this morning, it started to rain just as I got set up, so I’ll return at least once more to try again. The challenge is that this stream is in a generally wet part of the island and today the stream was swollen. I had to wade into it to get the shot, but if it’s much higher on my next visit I’m not sure I’ll be able to access the …

I took this image two days ago while on the south side of Maui. The sun was fading fast and I ran out of my car, clamped my camera to the tripod and shot almost directly into the sun (the sun is a few degrees to the left). I held my hand to the side of the camera to avoid flare. The image you see here is straight out of the camera, with no post-processing, converted to a jpg for posting here on my blog.
What appealed to me was the …

Most people know the route as the Road to Hana. But what about the return trip, what I call the Road From Hana? Sure, many people simply turn around at Hana and drive back as they came, and there’s nothing wrong with that. The views are magnificent as I described in yesterday’s blog.
But there is another way to return from a visit to glorious Hana. Just keep driving clockwise, following the shore road. At first your journey is familiar, passing through deep foliage and waterfalls. But then the vistas open …
