About Me

Les on assignment, Eastern desert, Egypt

Hi! Thanks for visiting my site.

I am a professional photographer and writer with more than 600 writing and photo credits in National Geographic Society publications, Better Homes & Gardens, Forbes, Time, Inc. Publications, Money, Fortune Small Business, Bloomberg Personal Finance, National Parks Magazine, and dozens of newspapers, magazines and other publications. For three years I was a columnist for Oceans Magazine and for four years was Editor-In-Chief for a national environmental journal. For four years I was a weekly columnist for The Baltimore Sun and an Op-Ed writer. I still write and photograph feature travel articles for them. For three years I was a regular business commentator on National Public Radio’s Marketplace, carried on 260 stations nationwide. I’m a proud member of the American Society of Journalists and Authors (ASJA), Nikon Professional Services (NPS) and Hasselblad Professionals.

I also have an earned doctorate in environmental affairs from the University of Maine, which I feel helps make me a better nature photographer.

Feel free to send me your photography questions and I’ll do my best to answer them in my blog.

Hey. I really liked your advice on the ScottEVest ( he is a genius ) website. I used his vest in Egypt for two weeks last summer and it was great. Goes well with a Tilley Hat ( g) but I use HeadNHome for most of my cowboy hats and OR for sunhats….

But I totally agree …. I used my DSLR not at all in Egypt. Took a Panasonic Lumix LX-3 and a Nikon L22 which takes AA batteries, as well as my new little red Kodak Zi8 which can pass for a cell phone. You can get amazing video footage by putting it to your ear and turning 90 degrees from the subject and talking into it….. (g).

    Thanks, Hal.

BTW, I agree about Tilley (and ScotteVest). I use mine about 90% of the time while in the field. They just replaced one that I wore out after about 25 years!

Lots of photographers are choosing to travel with a pocket camera. Some of the newer ones are simply terrific, like the new Canon G12 (my wife now uses that one exclusively).

    Best wishes,

    Les

    Hi Les,
I have been looking for a family vacation for some time that would satisfy our teenager grandchildren and adults alike. After reading your article on Vancouver Circuit, I think I may have found it. Since half of my family is coming from Germany for this trip, I wanted it to be spectacular. I was wondering if you could give me a ballpark price for the two week vacation as you did it? That information would be much app.
I found your description mouth watering and breath-taking. I would like to plan this for next summer.
    Thank you,
    Carol Schreiber

    Hi Carol:

Much of the cost will be determined by where you plan to stay. For example, Moraine Lake Lodge is pricey (but well worth the splurge). There are more reasonable accommodations in Lake Louise or nearby. I would also recommend Cathedral Mountain Lodge, a sister property to Moraine Lake Lodge, but more affordably priced. All their current prices are available on their websites. It’s hard to compare it to what we spent, since our 17-year old granddaughter, who has traveled with us since she was an infant, still shares a room with us when we travel.

Similarly, I suggest you go to the Rocky Mountaineer, ViaRail and BC Ferries sites for current pricing. Of the three, the Rocky Mountaineer will be most expensive. Via Rail offers less expensive options.

In general, you will incur expenses for:

    Rail
    Ferry
    Lodging
    Auto
    Food

If you create a travel organizer of your own liking, just visit each site and plug in the numbers. That shouldn’t take more than a couple of hours, max. Once you do that, you can go back and tweak the schedules to suit your family’s needs.

If you run into any challenges as you prepare this itinerary, don’t hesitate to ask me for suggestions. The more specific the questions, the better I’ll be able to respond.

Have a wonderful time and please write to tell us how it went.

    Les

    Hey Les,
so…my daughter just boarded the Corwith Cramer…out of Woods Hole….hopefully one of my kids will have salt in her veins.
Just another way of saying ‘thanks’ ….I remember the field trip to Bar Island with great affection.
The boys and I just returned from staying in our cabin on Green’s Island (next to Huricane)…so the Maine connection is also still there. check out some photos on my facebook page.
