Spectacular Northern Lights Image

22 August 2012 4 Comments

Damn that Richard Hartmier! Those of you who read my blog know how much I like and admire Richard, a friend and very capable pro photographer from the Yukon (you’ve got to be capable to make a living as a photographer in the Yukon). But, damn him all the same!
Richard managed to capture this incredible Northern Lights image just a few miles from his home in Whitehorse. Folks, this is only mid-August and it’s rare to get Northern Lights this early. But the lights are at an 11-year peak from now through 2013, which is why Richard and I are heading to Iceland together in September, 2013 to get some Fall images there, along with, hopefully, the Northern Lights. I thought I’d share Richard’s incredible image with you. It was taken next to Schwatka Lake on the outskirts of Whitehorse, the capital of Yukon Territory.

For now at least, Richard has the upper hand in our friendly rivalry. Damn him!

I was wondering if the two of you are going to stay at the Langaholt Guesthouse again this time around. I met the two of you there, May of this year as you were working your way around the island. Thanks for the advice on the tripod, wished I had it before I came as I lost about 2 hours of shots up a Hraunfossar because I was doing exposures of about 3 to 5 seconds, lost them because of wind shake. I could go back there just for the fish dinner and I do not like fish that well, but the way she cookes it, it is a good as a porterhouse and I love those (don’t tell anyone I said that, I use to live on a beef farm). One last thing how did you shots of the chopped BMW turn out, I didn’t get the right angle. So enjoy yourselfs up there, and Damn you for being there and me here

      Allan:
Yes, I do remember you and yes we do plan on staying at Langaholt again (aren’t they wonderful people?!). Sorry about your lost shots due to “the shakes.” Now you know and will, I’m sure, carry around at least a travel tripod next time. I really did not take more than one or two shots of the chopped BMW cycle. Richard did, so I’ll send your comment to him to see if he has anything good (he probably does, damn him!).

      Best wishes,

      Les

      Richard:

Great. Please send them to me and I’ll post them here for Allan to see, along with the story of our adventure at Langaholt. Alternately, I can send you Allan’s email address (offline).
