Coming of Age Onboard Ship

21 August 2010 2 Comments

We’re sitting on the aft deck of the Northern Expedition, a BC Ferry en route from Prince Rupert to Port Hardy, British Columbia, Canada, when I notice my granddaughter, bless her 16-year old heart, staring at my hands, which were at that moment, clutching my camera and a telephoto lens.

“Pop-pop,” she says, perfectly seriously. “I think you should be a hand model for AARP.” Then she bursts out laughing.

So, my question for you, dear reader’s, is this: Is she right? (Please be kind!)

    Les,

AARP hires young people for all of their illustrations, editorial, and lifestyle type images. The only people in that magazine that are over 60 are the rock stars and actors – not normal people, they are all prematurely grey 30 somethings with the skin of 20 somethings.

What this demonstrates is that teenagers see everyone post 30 has really really old.

    Les,

If after all that UV exposure you’ve had — camping, studying, photographing in the wild — your hands look that good, imagine how fine other less-exposed parts of your body must appear. Whether it’s in your best interest to model these parts for the AARP public, well, I leave that to your own discretion!
